Getting more and more listeners and downloads of your podcast is great. It means that a real person is hopefully listening to at least a portion of your show.
That person will hear what you have to say. Enjoys your education and entertainment. And most likely hears any call to actions you might have in your podcast.
But if you were given the choice of 1,000 listeners or 1,000 email subscribers…
Which would you take?
I’m guessing for 95% of you – it’s going to be email subscribers. The reason being is you can always get in front of that email subscriber. 3 years from now after you’ve stopped your podcast you can still send an email.
And the ability to convert an email subscriber to a customer (and track it) is far easier than a podcast listener to a customer.
The issue then becomes. How do I turn a portion (if not all) of my listeners into email subscribers. And that my friend is the challenge.
Mix up your call to actions
This is a concept I’m passionate about. If at the intro and exit of every show you’re driving people to the same opt-in whether it be a free email course or e-book it’s going to get old and INEFFECTIVE.
Instead if you’re switching up the actions your asking people to make you’ll see an increased engagement rate and ultimately more email subscribers. Because one opt-in might be appealing to one set of people and another appealing to a different group

Create unique content upgrades
I just wrote an article about this and even since then I’ve been more and more convinced about the power of unique content upgrades for shows. If you are struggling to convert listeners into subscribers this will definitely get you started. Why do so few people do it? It takes extra time, work, and money for each show. And most people just won’t take that extra step.

Always drive people back to your website
If you have any show notes, links or anything else – always drive people back to your website. Any opportunity you get to add something to your site go ahead and do it.
The more people that come to your site, the more people you should convert into your email list. Make sure you’ve gone through and checked your site to make sure it’s converting at the best rate as possible – I wrote an article about this here.
CALL TO ACTION: Put any resources on your website and mention them on the show. Go here and make sure your website is optimized to convert podcast visitors into email subscribers.
